At Los Alamos National Laboratory, current processing requirements dictate that items can only be processed if they meet specific criteria, like creation date, location, measurement method, and naming convention. If an item does not meet this criteria, one method of allowing the item to be worked is via the Feedlist Process. With an operational history that dates back to the 1940’s, many items in LANL’s inventory do not have approved current processing requirement. The solution to these old items it to create approved Feedlists, or other methods, for proper processing.
A Feedlist must go through multiple stages prior to issuance for work. The first stage in generating a feedlist is to review the historical and processing transactions on the items of interest. This step is to ensure the item’s processing history is well known and understood so no unexpected items or materials get processed in the wrong manner. After the items are investigated, then the feedlist is reviewed by a panel of subject matter experts to discuss the various aspects of the item, like the proposed assay or processing method. After the items have been fully reviewed, the Feedlist then gets approved by the appropriate parties, agreeing that the item has undergone the required reviews. Once all signatures have been collected, the Feedlist then gets issued to the Operations team who will perform the work. Feedlists are managed and tracked to ensure duplicate items are not on multiple feedlists with conflicting processing requirements. In summary, the Feedlist process is crucial in assisting the de- inventory of old items in LANL’s inventory.
